Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, is an island nation in South Asia, located in the Indian Ocean to the southwest of the Bay of Bengal. Known for its diverse landscapes ranging from rainforests and arid plains to highlands and sandy beaches, Sri Lanka is a jewel in the Indian Ocean.

The majority of the population is from the Sinhalese ethnicity, while a large minority of Tamils have also played an important role in the island's history.
